The first couple of years that I had to develop a marketing strategy for my job, I had actual anxiety over it. I remember my boss asking me to put together a proposal and I was terrified! I didn’t know what was reasonable, what would make me look good, what would make my life miserable throughout the year, and what was a healthy strategy. Frankly, I didn’t even know how to build a strategy at first, I just messed around till I came up with something. Previous to that, I was just winging it, and hoping that at the end of the year somehow I would have met my goals.
Does any of that feel a little too familiar? Even if you’re not coming up with a strategy that you hope will impress your boss – even if you ARE the boss – it can be such an intimidating process! I know that, because I’ve been there.
So how does a business owner craft a marketing strategy that will help her actually reach her goals?
First, it starts with having good goals. It’s not enough to just say “I’m want to make more money”, or “I’m going to grow my business”, or “I want more likes”. Those are all great plans and desires, but they aren’t GOALS. For something to be a goal, it needs to be measurable.
Can you identify your plan or dream, and then assign a time frame, a dollar amount, or something else quantifiable?
“I want to bring in more money” and “I want to increase sales by 2% in one year” are two totally different things. “I want to bring in more money” could be accomplished by earning one cent more next year over this year – but that isn’t really what you meant when you said you wanted to bring in more money, right? But knowing a specific amount you want to earn, and a specific time frame, gives you something you can actually measure. You will know without a doubt whether or not you hit that goal!
(If this is all new stuff to you, I encourage you to learn more about S.M.A.R.T. goals. Just google it. This will really help you work out a better set of goals for next year.)
Once you know what your goals are, you’ll be in a good position to develop a marketing strategy that will help you reach those goals!
What does it look like for someone to build a marketing strategy?
Honestly, there isn’t one singular way to do it. But no matter how someone approaches it, it’s usually a very intense process for people who haven’t done it before, no matter how they go about it. Some people naturally know how to think through things like this and make a plan. But for many, they could use some guidance.
So I have a gift for you.
I wrote out an entire process, with worksheets, and tons and tons of information and details, and I put it into an email series that you can have for free!
To be honest, as I was creating it I realized it would be better served as a course, with videos and screenshots and more. And maybe I’ll do that next year. But since I really just wanted to get it into your hands ASAP, it’s an email course for now. It’s the time of year for goal-setting and planning, so I didn’t want to delay and take the time to build a formal course. So my gift to you – you can call it an early Christmas present – is a free email series that will walk you through the process of building your marketing strategy!
I call it a Marketing Strategy Blueprint. Because blueprints are really “guides” that show you how to build something, right? They identify the parts, and show the engineers how they go together. And that’s what this series is: it’s a blueprint that identifies the parts you need to consider, and shows you how to go about putting it all together.
So what is the Marketing Strategy Blueprint like? What’s included, and how will it help you?
It’s 5 emails, each with worksheets, homework, and lots of explanation, delivered over the course of a week.
It will help you figure out how to chart your goals for the year, and the marketing associated with them (along with your base-line marketing) and get it all scheduled out.
Then it goes a step further and shows you how to really get focused, one quarter at a time, and work through the content of your marketing, and get things created and planned so that it can go out to your audience with time to spare – relieving you of unnecessary stress and worry.
The emails come out one day at a time, in order to break up the process. This way you can handle one step at a time, and not be overwhelmed by trying to do all of it at once. It’s a lot to think about, and a lot to work through, so breaking it down will help you keep your head clear.
By the end of the process, you will:
- have a general plan for the next 12 months, to help you accomplish your goals
- have a specific plan for the first quarter of next year
- know what work you need to do first, before that first quarter gets away from you
- understand techniques that will enable you to manage your time and your processes
- feel more confident and intentional about reaching your goals
What you WON’T find in this blueprint (the not-so-fine print):
First, you won’t find cheats and hacks. Real, lasting results take real, honest, work. Yes, I want you to find the most efficient ways to get things done, but that doesn’t mean I want you to skip the work and aim for flashy but temporary results.
Second, this blueprint doesn’t do the work for you! It holds your hand and tells you what to do, but it’s not going to hand you a finished product.
And third, it doesn’t guarantee you any specific results. You will get results based on your planning and your follow-through, as well as other influences. This blueprint isn’t meant to provide results, it’s designed to walk you through the process of determining how you’ll get results!
So if any of that sounds good to you, here’s what you need to do:
1. Identify your goals for the next year, if you haven’t done that yet.
2. Enter your information below and subscribe to the email series.
3. Work through the series over the next week or so, and be sure to touch base with me if you have questions along the way.
It won’t feel smooth and comfortable the first time around, but it will give you a process that you can repeat, tweak, and make your own – so that you can have a process that is perfect for your business!
So go ahead, enter your details below, and let’s get that strategy built!
